Course Load
How many courses should I take during exchange?
According to our Course Registration, all students are required to enrol not more than 21 credits and not less than 12 credits in a semester unless prior approval is sought from Registry. HKSYU’s outbound exchange students are required to maintain their full-time student status while abroad and enrol not less than 12 HKSYU credits (equivalent to 18 ECTs) in a semester.
Please also pay attention to the regulations of the host institution concerning course selection and registration.
Credit transfer
1. How to apply for credit transfer?
– When you apply for the Study Abroad Scheme, make sure that your potential host institutions offer courses of your major. Search the full course outlines from the relevant websites and have a preliminary discussion with your departmental coordinator regarding your intention to exchange/ study abroad.
– Once you have been nominated by HKSYU to a host institution, you must consult with your department coordinator on course selection.
– You must fill in the Credit Transfer Form and ask your departmental coordinator for conditional approval.
– Your academic department will examine the course outlines of your enrolled courses and decide whether conditional approval will be granted.
– Please note that credit transfer will only be confirmed after you have passed the courses with the evidence of an official transcript.
2. Can I apply for credit transfer if I am a Year 3 entrance?
– Students admitted directly to Year 3 must complete at least 50% of the total number of credits required for the award of the degree at HKSYU. Therefore, they cannot apply for credit transfer if they decide to join the Study Abroad Scheme.
3. Will the grades I receive during my exchange/ study abroad affect my CGPA calculation?
– No. Grades for courses completed abroad would not be included in the calculation of CGPA and Honours classification.
4. Can I graduate on time?
– You must consult with your departmental coordinator for any department-specific requirements.
– If you miss the required core courses or compulsory placement during the exchange/ study abroad, you are required to defer graduation until you successfully complete the outstanding credits in the HKSYU programme.
