In Spring 2024, a total of 10 students embarked on their exchange journey in Europe, bringing back not only positive feedback but also souvenirs. A student named CHIU Sze Yan, who majored in Journalism and Mass Communication, attended Adam Mickiewicz University in Poland.

When Sze Yan first arrived in Poland, she felt lost in a new environment.  Fortunately, her study buddies arranged by the host university welcomed her and assisted with practical matters, like applying for a student transportation card. Together, they built friendships and supported each other. Sze Yan also shared her expertise by helping to film a video for their assignment. In addition, she had a chance to visit their homes, share aspect of Hong Kong culture, and watch classic HK movies like “Infernal Affairs” and “Fight Back to School” with them.

As a journalism student, this exchange program broadened my global perspective. Traveling across borders, visiting different countries, interacting with diverse individuals, and experiencing various cultures have been enlightening and enriching experiences.” Sze Yan shared. “I volunteered at a local organization in Ukraine, where I crafted camouflage suits for frontline soldiers. I witnessed the hardships of living in a conflict-ridden country, including how people cope with daily air raid alarms. Walking through Independence Square in Ukraine, I saw portraits of fallen soldiers displayed in the grass, alongside poignant performances by street artists. These experiences revealed realities that cannot be fully grasped through international news alone.”

Through the Study Abroad Scheme, she broadened her horizons and enriched her understanding of diverse cultures by meeting people around the world and visiting various places. Although she doesn’t feel significantly more mature upon her return—still prone to making mistakes and far from perfect—she has no regrets about bravely signing up for this adventure and embracing the world.

Sze Yan sent a thoughtful package of souvenirs to the center after her exchange, expressing her gratitude for the wonderful opportunity she received!
